Software Engineering & Data Science in a Business Organization

By: Prashant Potluri

As someone interested in both software engineering and data science, I see TBS as the perfect place to connect my technical skills with the business world. In today’s world, almost every industry is driven by technology and data, and TBS can help me learn how to apply these skills to real-world business challenges.

Connecting Tech into the Business World

Learning Beyond Coding

While I’ve spent a lot of time improving my coding abilities, I want to explore how those skills can make a difference in business. TBS offers case competitions and workshops that can teach me to think beyond just solving technical problems. I’m excited to develop new skills, like leadership and communication, which are just as important as technical knowledge when working in teams. Being able to see how my technical skills can help businesses grow and improve is something I’m really looking forward to.

The Importance of Networking

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned so far is how important networking can be. It was through networking that I landed my internship at a top defense company, and that experience showed me how powerful connections can be. Meeting new people, attending events, and reaching out to professionals helped open doors for me that I didn’t expect.TBS will give me even more opportunities to meet and learn from others who share my interests and goals. I know that being part of this community will help me grow both personally and professionally.

Final Thoughts

It’s easy to feel out of place when you’re pursuing software engineering in a business-focused organization like TBS. I’ve definitely felt that way at times, seeing others talk about finance or marketing while I’m focused on coding and data. But over time, I’ve realized that the diversity of skills and interests is what makes an organization like TBS so valuable. Everyone’s journey is different, and just because mine is more technical doesn’t mean it’s any less relevant. In fact, bringing a software engineering perspective to a business setting has shown me how much the two worlds overlap. It’s important to remember that you don’t have to fit into a specific mold to thrive. By embracing what makes you unique, and learning from those around you, you can carve out your own path—whether that’s in tech, business, or somewhere in between. Being part of TBS has shown me that there’s a place for everyone, and it’s about finding your way to make an impact, no matter your background.
